  • Through some of the coldest nights in a century, the students of New Delhi gathered outside the city’s police headquarters

Through some of the coldest nights in a century, the students of New Delhi gathered outside the city’s police headquarters. They chanted anti-government slogans, recited Pakistani resistance poets, and flashed witty posters to make a stand against a new citizenship law that excludes Muslims.

As the confrontations continue across the country, though, they’ve morphed into a wider protest against economic prospects and financial disparities. Violence flared at campuses as the authorities cracked down on the demonstrations that have become Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s biggest test since he won power more than five years ago.

“Their handling of the economy is disastrous,” said Akshay Bajaj, 29, a post-doctoral student who helped organize protests at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. “There are no jobs, falling growth and rocketing prices for vegetables.”

The protests were triggered by a new law called the Citizenship Amendment Act that fast-tracks religious minorities from three neighboring countries, except for Muslims. They intensified after police stormed the Jamia Millia Islamia university in December to crush what it said were acts of vandalism.

In solidarity, students spilled out of colleges across the capital and even elite management and technology schools to protest against Modi and his confidante Amit Shah, India’s powerful minister for internal security.

“Nationalism, far from being reversed, made further headway,” billionaire philanthropist George Soros told the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, according to excerpts from his speech. The biggest and “most frightening setback,” he said, was in India.

Protesters say the law undermines India’s Constitution, which treats all religions equally. They fear it will be misused, together with a proposed National Citizens’ Register, to disenfranchise poor Muslims who lack the documents to prove their residency. The government instead should have expended its energy on reversing the worst economic slump in a decade and the highest unemployment rate in 45 years.

“The government doesn’t attempt to answer the grievances of the people, it is instead distracting us with these kind of issues,” said Mihir Jain, 26, a chartered accountant who last month participated in his first ever public protest. “If today we allow them to go ahead with this, we don’t know what will come next.”

Peaceful protests continued last week, with at least two dozen rallies and sit-ins in Mumbai and New Delhi and several others scattered across the country. The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred a hearing on cases challenging the constitutional validity of the citizenship law. A human chain is planned for Jan. 30, the anniversary of the slaying of Mahatma Gandhi by a Hindu fundamentalist, according to messages being shared on college WhatsApp groups.

  • India’s decision to buy Russia’s S-400 missile defense system could spark an arms race

India’s decision to buy Russia’s S-400 missile defense system could spark an arms race, Pakistan has claimed, urging its regional rival to ditch it for the sake of “stability” the same day it tested a new nuclear-capable missile.
Citing “concerns regarding the induction of ballistic missile defense systems in the region,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Aisha Farooqui told reporters on Thursday that the S-400 was a “destabilizing system” which could “undermine deterrence and stability in South Asia and lead to an unnecessary arms race.”

The Pakistani official also stressed that “the induction of [ballistic missile defense] should not lead to any false sense of security and any misadventure,” arguing that Pakistan “has the technological capability to ensure the continued efficacy of its deterrence.”

Ironically, the statement follows Islamabad’s latest surface-to-surface ballistic missile launch – testing its nuclear-capable Ghaznavi munition – which was successfully carried out this week as part of field training exercises.

  • Big economic push

    Big economic push
The Brazilian economy has improved under Bolsonaro but is still performing below potential, while India is in an economic slowdown. Both nations will likely want to help each other on the economy, so expect some big announcements.

Besides seven ministers in his delegation, Bolsonaro is bringing representatives of 50 major companies ranging from agriculture to defense. India and Brazil will sign a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). Brazil will also be the first country to sign an investment protection agreement with India, ensuring that capital investments in each other’s nations are safe, protected and encouraged.

Indian sugarcane farmers are protesting sugar giant Brazil’s complaint at the World Trade Organisation against India’s cane subsidies, but that won’t get in the way of major agreements on bio-energy and ethanol production, pension fund investments, agriculture, oil and gas production, animal husbandry, crime and cybersecurity.

The Modi and Bolsonaro meeting may not be the most explosive, but when two of the world’s biggest emerging powers meet on a very special occasion, it is a clear signal to the big boys: We are here to play our game, not yours.

  • Family history and subthreshold symptoms which do not reach the criteria for depression are the two current methods for accessing the risk of depression

A team of researchers has extended their efforts to identify a predictive tool that helps to identify young people who are likely to experience high or low depressive disorder when they reach around the age of eighteen.

The team include researchers from King’s College London and the study was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Despite the prevalence of depression, little has been done to identify the causes, symptoms, solutions for the condition while predictive tools have already been developed for psychosis and many physical health conditions.

Family history and subthreshold symptoms which do not reach the criteria for depression are the two current methods for accessing the risk of depression.

  • The non-descript mausoleum at the corner of Rundall’s Road, opposite the police commissioner’s office in Chennai

The non-descript mausoleum at the corner of Rundall’s Road, opposite the police commissioner’s office in Chennai, does not compare as a daily draw for visitors like Rajghat does for Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi. But E.V. Ramasamy Naicker, whose remains are interred here and is eulogised as Thanthai Periyar (Respected Father), wields huge influence among Tamilians, dominating the socio-cultural-political sphere more than any other personality. The Tamil nationalist, self -respect movement started by him has touched people from all walks of life. Acolytes and supporters of the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK), which he founded, may not pay regular homage at his mausoleum ‘Periyar Thidal’ but they are ever ready to rise in defence of their iconoclast at the slightest provocation.

Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth knows the Tamil psyche well, but he may have bit off more than he can chew with his refusal to apologise for his Periyar comments. At the golden jubilee celebrations of Thuglak magazine in Chennai on January 14, Rajini referred to the magazine’s reportage of the Superstition Eradication Conference. He recalled the references by Periyar, the alleged outrageous depictions of Hindu deities at a tableau there, and Thuglak’s critical comments, which he claimed no other publication had reported. “The magazine reported that Rama and Sita were paraded naked and garlanded with slippers at Periyar’s rally in 1971 in Salem. I have not said something that did not happen. I have not imagined it. Lakshmanan (then Jan Sangh and now BJP leader) who took part in a dharna (against the rally in 1971) has corroborated it,” Rajini emphasised later, rejecting the demand for an apology.

  • While, states like Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are regulars at the economic summit

While, states like Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are regulars at the economic summit, a Karnataka CM has set up a pavilion at the WEF after 17 years.

Talking about his new image, BS Yediyurappa said that he still identifies himself as the farmer’s son but now he knows that industries are equally important. “Farmers and irrigation are my first priority, but I know industries are important as well. I am very happy that we chose to come to WEF after so many years. It has surely helped the investors know our mind and eagerness to invite investments. We have shown them we are serious in our business.”

Yediyurappa told India Today TV that out of the 40 investor meets he attended, several companies have expressed interest in bringing their businesses to Karnataka. “We will make sure that all their concerned in a time-bound manner, we will listen to them and make sure all their hurdles are removed as soon as possible,” he said.

Speaking about the anti-CAA protests in Karnataka and the rest of India, Yediyurppa said that they were baseless and politically motivated. “I want to ask my Muslim friends to give me one example where Muslims are going to be affected [by CAA]. I posed this question a few days ago at a gathering of Haj leaders and they agreed with me that since Congress has no other issue they are creating an issue out of this. Students who are protesting will soon realise their mistake,” he said.

  • Thousand of security personnel have been deployed and CCTV cameras installed at strategic locations in the national capital

Thousand of security personnel have been deployed and CCTV cameras installed at strategic locations in the national capital to keep vigil ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.

Multi-layered security arrangements are in place. Sharpshooters and snipers will be deployed atop high-rise buildings to keep a watch on the 8km-long parade route from Rajpath to the Red Fort on January 26, officials said.

In view of widespread protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the officials have imposed restrictions on wearing black caps or scarves during Republic Day celebrations. However, the officials said that this has been the practise every year.

Police have been directed to stay utmost alert since Delhi polls are also around the corner. Anti-terror measures like tenant and servant verification, border checking, security of vital installations, malls and markets, patrolling in heavy footfall areas are being taken, they said.

“We have intensified patrolling in public places. Group patrolling, night patrolling and vehicle checking is being carried out with the help of Central Armed Police Forces. Frisking at metro stations, railway stations, airport and bus terminals have also been tightened,” a senior police official said.

At least 150 CCTV cameras have been installed in areas covering Red Fort, Chandni Chowk and Yamuna Khadar, the officer added.

  • Ever eager to tout his massive following, US President Donald Trump claimed to have the “number one” Facebook account

Ever eager to tout his massive following, US President Donald Trump claimed to have the “number one” Facebook account, even edging out Indian PM Narendra Modi – but the stats show he has some catching up to do.
The social media showboating came during an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, when the conversation turned to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“Well, I met him – and he told me that I’m number one in the world in Facebook,” the president told CNBC’s Joe Kernen.

He sat down. He said, ‘Congratulations. You’re number one’ … and I said, ‘That’s really nice.’ It’s always nice to be number one. You know who number two is? … Modi of India. But he has 1.5 billion people. I have 350 [million].

Unfortunately for the internet-savvy commander in chief, that is simply not so. A brief look at Modi’s Facebook page shows the PM enjoys some 44.2 million followers, surpassing Trump by nearly 17 million people. Even accounting for a separate presidential page, which has garnered over 5.3 million followers, Trump still doesn’t beat out his Indian counterpart. In terms of likes, the combined total of the two Trump pages amounts to 28.7 million, which while certainly impressive, remains well below Modi’s 44.5 million.

US President Donald Trump has again floated the idea that Washington could referee talks between India and Pakistan to resolve the dispute over Kashmir, but Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan didn’t appear to bite.

Trump reiterated the offer at a meeting with Khan on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday, calling the PM his “friend” and making yet another attempt to insert the US into the Kashmir row.

“We’re talking about Kashmir … if we can help, we certainly will be helping. We’ve been watching that and following it very, very closely,” Trump said.

  • Expansion of Indian air power in the region

Expansion of Indian air power in the region

Indeed, the BrahMos anti-ship missile – a success story of Indo-Russian defense partnership – is a highly potent weapon boasting supersonic speeds with a range of about 300km and renders most countermeasures invalid. The missile was reportedly successfully test-fired from a Sukhoi-30MKI in May 2019, scoring a direct hit on the target. The Sukhois, which have a range of around 1,200km, significantly increase India’s capability to strike targets deep in the Indian Ocean and to virtually cover most shipping lanes in the region.

The new No. 222 Squadron, named ‘Tiger Sharks’, will initially have around five to six fighter jets but gradually it will operate with a full strength of 18 aircraft. This is the first fighter squadron to be set up by the Indian Air Force in its Southern Command covering the Indian Peninsula. Retired Air Vice-Marshal Manmohan Bahadur stated: “The requirement of having a permanent footprint of Indian air power over the Indian Ocean was lacking. With the basing of Sukhois at Thanjavur, this deficiency would be overcome to a certain extent due to the deep strike capabilities of the aircraft.”

    印度在2010年开始研发这种能够携带2000公斤的亚千吨级核弹,也可以携带常规弹头的导弹导弹。本来K-4导弹试射计划在2019年10月进行,但由于某种原因测试被推迟。

  • New Delhi is considering participating in Russian oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the Arctic as cooperation with Moscow

New Delhi is considering participating in Russian oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the Arctic as cooperation with Moscow could open vast opportunities for India in the resource-rich region.
“We are establishing cooperation in geological exploration, joint development of oil and gas fields on the territories of the two countries, including offshore projects, which will eventually allow India to become the first non‑Arctic state to extract resources in the Arctic,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Times of India.

India, one of the largest and fastest growing LNG markets, wants to get Russian LNG from the Arctic to satisfy its growing energy demand. It could join the Arctic LNG project led by Russian energy giant Novatek, according to India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan.

“We are also studying the opportunities to participate in the future Novatek project in the Arctic. We are looking into all the opportunities to get LNG from this region,” the minister told reporters on Wednesday. The interest in Russian gas supplies comes as India turns away from joint projects with neighboring Pakistan. New Delhi has refused to sign a memorandum of understanding on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline construction amid escalating tensions with Islamabad.

The men who gang raped and killed a female student on a bus in New Delhi in 2012 will face punishment eight years later, after exhausting all legal options to delay execution. The grizzly case inspired a Netflix miniseries.

The four males were set to be hanged on January 22, but one of them filed a ‘mercy plea’ earlier this week in a desperate attempt to win more time, the latest in a series of appeals. With the request rejected, however, there seem to be no more obstacles for the verdict to run its course.

Six people were initially charged with the crime, but one of them committed suicide in his cell, while another was released after three years due to being a juvenile.

  • The swipe at the newspaper nearly coincided with Bezos’ trip to India

The Washington Post has taken heat from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, whose official lamented its coverage as local traders voiced outrage over perceived aggression by another Bezos venture, Amazon.
There’s “a lot of problems” in how the newspaper is reporting from India, Vijay Chauthaiwale, chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) foreign affairs department, told Reuters.

“The Washington Post’s editorial policy is highly biased and agenda driven,” the official explained, without highlighting any examples.

He previously complained about foreign coverage of Indian-controlled Kashmir which was recently stripped of its decades-long autonomy, alleging blatant bias against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The swipe at the newspaper nearly coincided with Bezos’ trip to India. The founder of Amazon – who also owns the Washington Post – has been trying to aggressively pivot to India’s burgeoning online retail market.

NEW DELHI: Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Wednesday moved the Delhi high court challenging his conviction and life term for raping a minor girl in Unnao in 2017. Sengar challenged the December 20 verdict of a trial court here which had sentenced him to life imprisonment and had imposed an exemplary fine of Rs 25 lakh in the case.
The court had convicted Sengar for rape under the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act for offence by a public servant committing penetrative sexual assault against a child after holding the victim to be a minor.

The woman was kidnapped and raped by Sengar in 2017 when she was a minor.

  • former prime minister Indira Gandhi used to come to meet yesteryear don Karim Lala in Mumbai

Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday claimed that former prime minister Indira Gandhi used to come to meet yesteryear don Karim Lala in Mumbai. Recalling days of the underworld in Mumbai, Raut, who was earlier a journalist, said gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel and Sharad Shetty used to have control over the metropolis and adjoining areas. They used to decide who will be the police commissioner, who will sit in ‘Mantralaya’ (secretariat), Raut said in an interview to a media group during its award function here.

“When Haji Mastan used to come to ‘Mantralaya’, the entire ‘Mantralaya’ would come down to see him. Indira Gandhi used to come to meet Karim Lala in Pydhonie (in south Mumbai),” claimed Raut, whose party formed a coalition government with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra last year.

  • We haven’t closed the door on [the RCEP]. The ball is in the court of the countries concerned and whether they make it worth our while

More than two months after India pulled out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has suggested New Delhi could rethink its decision.
“We haven’t closed the door on [the RCEP]. The ball is in the court of the countries concerned and whether they make it worth our while,” he told the Raisina Dialogue, a three-day conference in the Indian capital organised by the government and the Observer Research Foundation think tank.
The RCEP is a free-trade agreement between 15 nations – the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
India had previously been expected to sign up but walked out of negotiations in a shock move in November last year, when the outline of the deal was agreed. At the time New Delhi cited concerns that its economy would suffer from an influx of overseas goods, especially from China.
The minister’s comments could breathe new life into the pact, which has been plagued by doubts since India walked out.
However, Jaishankar said the pact in its present form still did not make economic sense to India.
“The RCEP is, after all, a free-trade agreement and it has to be evaluated on its trade merits, its costs and its benefits. The bottom line was that the offers on the table did not match our requirements.”

Bollywood star Neha Bhasin has lashed out against top music composer Anu Malik, alleging that she found herself in a “sticky situation” with him as a young artist and branding him an “ugly pervert” in a series of angry tweets.
Bhasin was responding to tweets posted by fellow singer Sona Mohapatra, who was complaining that Malik had been rehired by Sony TV as a judge on Indian Idol – after being fired over accusations of sexual assault, including by her, only a year ago.
The singer-songwriter blasted Malik as a “predator” and said she had “run away from his strange moves” when she was 21. “I didn’t let myself get into a sticky situation beyond him lying on a sofa in front of me talking about my eyes in a studio,” she said, adding that she had fled the uncomfortable situation with the “ugly pervert” by telling him that her mother was waiting for her.

Deepika Padukone, Bollywood superstar and India’s highest-paid female actor, became a trending Twitter topic this week, after a strategic visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University – a center of ongoing anti-government protests.
In India’s volatile political climate where a huge debate ensued, and protests are raging over a new ‘anti-Muslim’ citizenship law, Padukone added fuel to fire by stepping into the premises of the university in New Delhi, which has become a “symbol of resistance” against an allegedly “fascist government,” to express solidarity with the protesting students. Padukone, whose latest film is released on Friday, knew exactly what she was doing.

The Left is politically irrelevant in India but its hold over educational institutions such as the JNU, or JU (Jadavpur University) make it possible to fight pitched battles from fortresses where disaffected students serve as tools for the ‘larger cause.’ In an era where news is a spectacle, the creation of unrest becomes a way for the Left to stay politically relevant. The fact that impressionable minds are pressed to the cause gives the Left’s political fight a moral veneer.

  • two superstars, Deepika Padukone and Ajay Devgn, has spilled over into a political domain beyond Bollywood, triggering a war of words over PM Modi’s policies

A seemingly innocuous box office battle between the films of two superstars, Deepika Padukone and Ajay Devgn, has spilled over into a political domain beyond Bollywood, triggering a war of words over PM Modi’s policies.

Indian film actor, director and producer Ajay Devgn’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ and Indian superstar actress and producer Deepika Padukone’s ‘Splash’ are very different movies in ways that extend far beyond storyline or budget. They appear to have divided audiences along ideological lines ever since they hit cinemas together on January 10.

The intense rivalry over the two films can be gauged by the fact that workers for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party are distributing free tickets for ‘Tanhaji’ – based on the legend of a Hindu warrior from the medieval era – in many places, while Congressmen, members of the main opposition party in India, are doing so for ‘Splash’, a biopic about acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

Several BJP leaders have called for a boycott of ‘Splash’, but in the Congress-ruled states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the movie has been declared tax-free in a bid to boost its prospects.

India has kicked off its annual Army Day celebrations with an elaborate military parade in Delhi. This year’s commemorations will feature the first woman officer leading an all-men unit.

Celebrations will be held across the country, but the main event is already underway at Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. The full might of the Indian Army has been put on display, including mechanized units, tanks, and various infantry units.

  • India is reportedly poised to invite Pakistani PM Imran Khan to an annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit

India is reportedly poised to invite Pakistani PM Imran Khan to an annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit – hosted in New Delhi this year – where the bloc’s leaders will sit down for a rare face-to-face encounter.
The SCO, the world’s largest multinational defense alliance, will convene for its yearly Heads of Government meeting in the Indian capital later this year, the first such gathering hosted by India, a relative newcomer to the organization. Despite ongoing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, however, New Delhi looks forward to welcoming Khan, and the ball is apparently now in Islamabad’s court, at least according to Indian officials cited by the Hindustan Times.

“According to protocol and convention, an invitation will be extended to the Pakistani Prime Minister,” an official familiar with the invitation procedure told the outlet.

  • The world’s largest retailer, Walmart, has laid off about a third of the executives at its Indian headquarters in Gurgaon

The world’s largest retailer, Walmart, has laid off about a third of the executives at its Indian headquarters in Gurgaon as it struggles to boost its business in the country.
The company fired a total of 56 people, including eight with senior management positions and others in middle and lower management, Krish Iyer, the president and CEO of Walmart India, said in a statement released to the media on Monday. The cuts reportedly amount to around one percent of the total staff working for the company in India.

“We are also looking for ways to operate more efficiently, which requires us to review our corporate structure to ensure that we are organized in the right way,” he said, adding that all the dismissed employees will be offered enhanced severance benefits and outplacement services.

An earlier report claimed that a second wave of dismissals is expected in April as the company may leave the wholesale segment in the country as it has failed to turn a profit. Walmart rebuffed the claims as “baseless and incorrect,” adding that its sales in the country rose 22 percent in 2019. The rise in sales, however, does not automatically mean that it did not sustain losses.

  • India’s anti-trust panel has launched a probe into Amazon and Walmart-run Flipkart amid claims they violated a competition law

India’s anti-trust panel has launched a probe into Amazon and Walmart-run Flipkart amid claims they violated a competition law, as India’s traders group plans to stage mass protests when Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos arrives this week.
The world’s second richest person and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos should hardly be counting on a red carpet welcome in India as he arrives in the country’s capital, New Delhi, later this week, with mass rallies and sit-ins being planned by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) protesting what it argues are the online retail giant’s ‘predatory’ trade practices.

The CAIT, which represents some 70 million small traders and businesses, has called on its supporters to go on strike on Wednesday, when Bezos is set to touch down.

The group argues that retail giants such as Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart have been selling products at dumping prices, pushing local merchants out of business. The CAIT accused Amazon of trying to spin its vulture capitalism as something that can empower small traders, while peddling “a wrong and false narrative.”

  • The Indian Navy has deployed its sole aircraft carrier to the Arabian Sea to keep an eye on a joint military drill between China and regional rival Pakistan

The Indian Navy has deployed its sole aircraft carrier to the Arabian Sea to keep an eye on a joint military drill between China and regional rival Pakistan.
The INS Vikramaditya, with a fleet of MiG-29K fighter jets on board, has arrived to monitor large nine-day naval exercise ‘Sea Guardians 2020,’ which was kicked off by Beijing and Islamabad in the northern part of the Arabian Sea on Monday.

The Navy spokesperson praised the “high levels of motivation & #willtowin, that were evident onboard the ‘Queen of the Battle,’” as the flagship carrier is often called in India.

Military sources told PTI that the top officials from the Navy HQ were present on board. They also said that the ship was sent on a voyage with “a strategic objective,” but did not disclose further details.

The carrier was reportedly testing out new hardware as well. A prototype of the HAL Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) has successfully taken off from the ship’s flight deck and landed on it on Saturday, military sources told NDTV and Hindustan Times. By doing so, the Tejas has become the first Indian-built jet to land on an aircraft carrier.

China brought five big warships for its drill with Pakistan, including the guided-missile destroyer Yinchuan and the guided-missile frigate Yuncheng, while Islamabad sent two Zulfiquar-class frigates, among other vessels. Pakistan’s Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi said that the joint maneuvers highlight “the long-term relationship and mutual trust” between the nations.

New Delhi has been tracking the increased activity of Chinese ships in the Indian Ocean. Last month, the Indian Navy reported that it had chased away a Chinese surveillance vessel after it had supposedly entered the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in September.

  • The impact of these events will surely spill over into 2020

Four events in 2019 portend profound changes in the future of India and Pakistan, neighboring nations umbilically tied by a very complex past. The impact of these events will surely spill over into 2020.
India, shaking off its ‘soft state’ image, sent war planes inside Pakistan to bomb what it alleged were jihadi training camps from which the Pulwama terror attack on February 14, 2019 – which killed 44 Indian soldiers – had been launched.

Delhi followed this up by removing Kashmir’s special status and integrating the state fully with the nation’s mainstream, in a stunning political manoeuvre.

Pakistan, a champion of the cause of Kashmir’s freedom from India, was far from looking at this positively.

In Pakistan, 2019 was the year the might of its military establishment was challenged. The country’s Supreme Court denied a three-year extension to Chief of Army Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa (Though later Pakistan’s National Assembly passed bills to extend Bajwa’s tenure).

Also, an Islamabad court sentenced former army chief and president Pervez Musharraf to death for treason. Even though the Pakistani government is to back Musharraf’s appeal, it’s symbolic of the erosion of the military’s grip on the country.

These verdicts leave an invisible noose hanging over Pakistan’s military headquarters and its real power centre, Rawalpindi.

  • The naval prototype of India’s domestic Light Combat Aircraft performed an arrested landing on the deck of the INS Vikramaditya

The naval prototype of India’s domestic Light Combat Aircraft performed an arrested landing on the deck of the INS Vikramaditya. The aircraft carrier is currently deployed to keep an eye on China-Pakistan military drills.
“After completing extensive trials on the Shore Based Test Facility (SBTF), the naval version of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) did a successful arrested landing onboard INS Vikramaditya at 1002 hours on Saturday,” a statement from India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said.
The maiden landing was praised by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as an important milestone in the development of the naval version of India’s single-engine, delta wing, multirole light fighter, the HAL Tejas.
